How to Get the Game Boy Camera Look

The Game Boy Camera came out in 1998, plugged into the top of a Game Boy, and took tiny four-shade photographs that people are still obsessed with. A lot of the searches that bring people to this site are looking for exactly that effect, so here's how to get as close as the converter allows, and an honest note about the bits it can't do.

What a Game Boy Camera photo actually is

The camera's sensor produced a 128 × 112 pixel image in four levels of grey, which the Game Boy then displayed in its four shades of green. That's it. No colour, no smooth gradients, 14,336 pixels in total. The distinctive look comes from three things: the very low resolution, the four hard-edged tones, and the camera's built-in dithering, which scattered the tones in patterns to fake smoother shading. Add the slightly blown-out exposure of a 1990s sensor and you have the aesthetic.

Step 1: crop to 8:7

128 by 112 is an 8:7 aspect ratio, which is nearly square and slightly wider than tall. Crop your photo to that shape first, otherwise the proportions will be off. If your editor lets you type a ratio, use 8:7. If not, a square crop is close enough and nobody will notice.

Step 2: work out the pixel size

You want 128 blocks across, so divide your cropped photo's width by 128 and use that as the pixel size. A 1024-pixel-wide crop wants pixel size 8. A 2048-pixel crop wants 16. If your photo is wider than about 5000 pixels the slider won't go high enough, so resize it smaller first. The pixel size guide has a table of these for other machines too.

Step 3: choose the Game Boy palette

Pick Game Boy from the palette menu. Unlike the other palettes, this one works purely on brightness: each block is averaged to a single level and dropped into one of four equal bands. That's very close to how the camera's sensor quantised light, which is why the results feel right even without the dithering.

Step 4: get the exposure right

This is the step that makes the biggest difference. Because the palette splits brightness into four equal bands, a photo that sits mostly in the middle two bands looks flat and grey-green. Real Game Boy Camera shots were often over-exposed, with bright faces against dark backgrounds. So before you convert:

A face that's mostly lightest-green with dark-green features and a near-black background is the classic look.

Step 5: export and scale

Download the PNG. It'll be the same size as your crop, which is fine for sharing. If you want the authentic tiny version, resize it down by the pixel size you used (so a 1024-wide export at pixel size 8 becomes 128 wide) with nearest-neighbour resampling. To display it large again, scale up by a whole number, again with nearest neighbour, so every block stays a crisp square. Real Game Boy Camera prints from the thermal Game Boy Printer were about 2.3 cm wide, so if you're printing one for a card, small is authentic.

What the converter doesn't reproduce

Two things, and it's worth being upfront about both.

What it does reproduce, and reproduce well, is the resolution and the four-band tonality, which are the two things that make a Game Boy photo instantly recognisable.

Grey instead of green

The Game Boy Pocket and the Game Boy Camera's own marketing often showed the four shades as greys rather than greens. The converter's Game Boy palette is green. If you want grey, convert with Game Boy, download, then desaturate the PNG in any image editor: the four greens become four evenly spaced greys and the image is otherwise identical.
