Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information 8-Bit Photo Converter collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. In short: your photos are processed entirely on your own device and are never uploaded to us.
Who we are
8-Bit Photo Converter ("we", "us", "the site") is a free online tool at 8bitphoto.co.uk that converts photos into retro pixel art in your browser. If you have any questions about this policy, you can reach us on our contact page.
Your photos never leave your device
The core of this site is deliberately private. When you select or drag in an image, all pixelation and palette conversion happen locally in your web browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded, transmitted, stored, or seen by us or any third party. When you close or refresh the page, the image is gone from memory. We keep no copies because we never receive any.
Information we collect
We do not ask you to create an account and we do not collect names, email addresses, or photos through the tool itself. The only data collected is standard, anonymised usage and advertising information gathered automatically through the third-party services below:
- Usage analytics — aggregate statistics such as pages visited, approximate region, device type, and referring site.
- Advertising data — information used by Google to serve and measure ads, as described below.
- Server logs — our hosting provider may record standard technical data such as IP address, browser type, and timestamps for security and reliability.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We and our partners use them to understand how the site is used and to display advertising. You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings, and most browsers let you block them entirely — though parts of the site may then behave differently.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects anonymised information such as the pages you view and roughly where in the world you are. This data is aggregated and does not personally identify you. You can opt out across all sites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Advertising & Google AdSense
This site displays advertising served by Google, using the Google AdSense programme. This section explains how that works:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- Google uses the DoubleClick DART cookie and the advertising cookie to serve ads based on your interests.
- Third-party vendors and ad networks may also use cookies to serve ads on this site.
You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of many third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices or, in the UK and Europe, at youronlinechoices.eu.
For more detail on how Google uses data when you use our partners' sites or apps, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
Legal basis and your rights (UK GDPR)
We are based in the United Kingdom and process the limited data above on the basis of your consent (for advertising and analytics cookies) and our legitimate interest in running and securing the site. Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of any personal data held about you, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Because we do not hold accounts or store your images, most requests can be resolved by clearing cookies or contacting us via the details below.
Children's privacy
This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Third-party links
Our pages may link to external sites (for example, documentation or the developer's profile). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and encourage you to read their policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised "last updated" date.
